Accentuate the Positive

Though it might seem like your depression has total control over your life, you’re not powerless against it. Work on incorporating positive thinking into your treatment plan; something as simple as thinking positive thoughts can do wonders in treating your depression symptoms.

One study from the University of Texas claims that those who suffer from depression actually become more focused on negative images and have difficulty dismissing them. While you’re thinking good thoughts, keep inspiring, positive images in your field of vision, as well. Until you’re better able to control your feelings, you should also stay away from the evening news and sad movies.

A great way to keep track of your negative and positive thoughts is in a journal. Try this exercise: For a few days, record any negative thought patterns you experience. Then try to convert negative thoughts into positive ones. Rather than saying “No one loves me,” make a list of the family and friends who do love you. Rather than saying “I never get anything right,” remember the kudos that your boss wrote on your performance evaluation last year.
